EQ2 were employed to provide the lighting design for the CrossRail C100 contract. The scope in this instance involved all of the primary underground elements within the Central London stations including escalator voids, platforms, adits and primary circulation routes.

A primary conceptual element for this project was the use of light to enhance the experience of using the Elizabeth Line – to make the movement around this piece of transport infra-structure, positive and engaging. In this context, artificial light can be particularly effective with textural alterations (illumination level, light colour, direct/indirect light) being used across the Elizabeth Line underground stations to communicate and enhance.

This work was undertaken in conjunction with Grimshaw Architects as part of a team led by Atkins, and the project won the RIBA 2024 Stirling Prize for Architecture.

A key challenge was to use light to make the movement around this piece of transport infra-structure, positive and engaging.
