Paddington Mainline Station

The brief for this project was to consider the fourth span of the Paddington Station building. This later addition to the three original Brunel designed Station Spans was suffering from some structural issues which were the catalyst for the refurbishment project.

In addition to providing a new, high quality ambient lighting provision across the station concourse, architectural feature lighting was introduced to visually enhance the station building and structure. The latter of these was considered to be beneficial with the electrification of the train lines coming into Paddington and the resultant reduction in the number of diesel locomotives.

The new lighting arrangement was reviewed, along with other design elements, from an experiential perspective, with the various lighting components working together to create one cohesive presentation. Key, in terms of enhancing the visual environment, was the feature lighting of the main station structure (the ribs) and specific treatments to the two end facades of Span 4.

This project was undertaken directly for Network Rail in conjunction with Oxford Architects.
