Project:

University of Birmingham Sports & Fitness Centre

Completed:
LOCATION:

This major new sports complex located within the University of Birmingham campus was aimed at attracting and encouraging elite sports activity to the city. In this respect, whilst the centre is primarily focussed on University of Birmingham students, it is also open to the public and for public events.

The entire complex, that incorporates competition grade basketball, badminton, squash and other courts-based sports, an extensive gym and a full-height climbing wall, is anchored by the Olympic standard swimming pool.

This project combined two key lighting design requirements – a technical, engineering input, with the need to ensure international competition standard illumination, and the requirement to create a conducive and responsive leisure environment.

The external presentation of the scheme was also of considerable importance. Lighting works with both landscape and architectural elements to create a positive post-dusk presence.

The completed project achieved a BREEAM Excellent accreditation and an EPC A rating, both firsts in the UK for this type of project. It also won RIBA National and Civic Trust Awards.
